A trustworthy recipe importer is not the one that promises the most sources. It is the one that preserves provenance, exposes a reviewable result, lets you correct it, fails clearly when evidence is insufficient, explains data handling, and gives you a practical way to retrieve your collection.
1. The original source remains visible
The imported recipe should retain the creator or publisher and URL when available. You need the source to check technique, context, corrections, and attribution. As one vendor example, Honeydew documents an original-source link; verify that behavior in the current build of any app you evaluate.
Be cautious if the result looks fully native but obscures where it came from.
2. Review happens before confidence
A useful importer separates ingredients and steps without claiming they are automatically correct. It should make quantities, units, yield, and method easy to compare with the source.
Mise creates reviewable, editable recipes from supported sources and retains the original source. This is a workflow claim, not a guarantee of completeness.
3. Missing information stays missing
The importer should reject, flag, or leave a gap when the source has insufficient evidence. A card that always looks complete may be reconstructing plausible details.
Ask whether estimated or generated content is labeled. Test with a source that intentionally lacks a quantity.
4. Corrections and personal edits are possible
You should be able to repair a transfer error and adapt a recipe without losing the source. Ideally, personal notes remain distinct from captured source content.
5. Support boundaries are specific
“Public recipe pages with accessible text” is a more testable claim than “anything from anywhere.” Check behavior for private posts, deleted links, regional restrictions, downloaded files, and unusual websites.
6. Data handling is understandable
Read the App Store privacy label and full policy. Determine whether URLs, selected text, images, or recipe content leave the device and whether model providers retain them. Remember that Apple describes privacy labels as developer-provided disclosures.
7. You can leave
Test export before building a large library. Understand account deletion, subscription cancellation, and whether readable copies remain available without the service.
A practical evaluation test
Use five sources you have the right to process:
- a clear public recipe page;
- a public social video with a complete caption;
- a video with one missing quantity;
- selected recipe text with a fraction;
- an unsupported or unavailable link.
Record correct fields, omissions, invented details, source retention, processing time, and recovery. Do not grade only the successful happy path.
Trust comes from inspectability
No importer removes the need for cooking judgment. A trustworthy one makes its work and limits easier to inspect, so you know when to continue, edit, or stop.
Try the workflow
Keep the source. Review the recipe. Cook from your version.
